Salt 101
Types of Salt-
Salt Requirements
- 1 teaspoon per gallon
- 25 lbs. per 1,000 gallons=3,000 ppm
Adding salt to the pool
- With the filter pump operating from the main drain; add salt into the pool. Brush the salt until it is no longer visible usually this takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on the water temperature
- Run the filter pump 24 hours to allow salt to completely dissolve
Common Misconceptions
Saltwater is more corrosive than chlorine.
- FACT: 4ppm of chlorine is 10 times more corrosive than 4,000 ppm of salt.
Any type of salt can be used in a swimming pool.
- FACT: Only 99% pure non-ionized salt can be used with electrolytic chlorine generators.
You won't have to do anything else!
- FACT: All basic water chemistry MUST be tested and properly maintained.
Water will taste salty.
- FACT: The normal human threshold for tasting salt in water is apporizamately, 4,000ppm. Most units can produce chlorine with as little as 2,700ppm of salt in the water.
A FEW Reasons for Salt
Automatically Creates FREE Chlorine.
- The average consumer spend hundreds of dollars a year on factory-created chlorine. In most cases, SwimPure Plus pays for itself within the first 3 years. That's 2 years before the warranty runs out!
Feel the water. Soft, Smooth & Silky
- The saline in our bodies are commonly referred to as electrolytes. When we swim in a pool using factory-created chlorine the electrolytes defuse out of our body causing dry itchy skin.
- When SwimPure is sanitizing your water, the saline content of the water and our bodies are in harmony causing a silky smooth feeling to our skin.
Eyes won't burn, Swim suits won't bleach & no more chlorine odor.
- Chloramines; the cause of all these symptoms in pool water, is oxidized out when SwimPure Plus is sanitizing your pool.
Water Chemistry Simplified
- Chlorine generated by SwimPure Plus is consistent, no highs or lows, so the pool will benefit from a more stabilized chemical balance.
Recycles Salt
- Electrolytic cell converts the salt into 100% chlorine. The chlorine is then released intothe pool to kill germs, bacteria and algae. Once these contaminants are oxidized the chlorine molecules automatically revert back to salt. And teh process then repeats itself over and over again.
Super Chlorination Feature
- If the pool has had a large bather load such as a kid's birthday party, the water may need a jolt of chlorine to take care of teh additional contaminants that have entered the pool. Factory-created chlorine treated pools need to perform this operation by mixing and distributing the chlorine "shock" by hand.
Benefits Of Electrolytic Chlorine Generation
Ease of Use
- Chlorine is generated automatically when the filter pump runs
- Adjustable chlorine output settings, easier to control chlorine
- No more buying, storing and handling of chlorine
- Salt only has to be added a few times a year
- Continuous application of chlorine means the pool is always ready
- Most systems have a super chlorination feature
- All that needs to be done is check salt and stabilizer once a month and adjust pH, alkalinity along with the calcium hardness on a regular basis
- Spend more time enjoying the pool and less time working on it
- Leave on vacation and know your coming back to a crystal clear pool, not a swamp!
- No dangerous chemicals being stored around the house, garage or yard
- No more mixing, measuring or dumping harsh, dangerous chemicals in pools
Quality pool water
- Bacteria and algae never have a chance to grow
- Crystal clear water all the time
- Water feels soft and silky
- Swimming in Saline, soothing to the eyes, no red eye or eye burn
- No more green hair
- System continually burns out organics that form Chloramines this means no more chlorine smell or itchy skin
- Reduces most water chemistry problems
- No more radical shifts in pH
- Pool water chemistry stays more constant
- Evenly dispersed sanitizer day in and day out, ensures healthy water
- No caustic or harmful by-products produced by system
- Close to neutral sanitizer being produced
- Easier to control TDS level in pool, level slowly dropping instead of constantly going up
The Payback
- Equipment and pool finishes will last longer
- No more constly mistakes
- pH stays more constant and the alkalinity is not affected like a swimming pool using Tri-chlor tabs
- Less balancing chemicals nedded
- Less cost over time
- Kids will be able to swim all day without red eye or eye burn
- They won't feel like they have to take a shower after they get out of the pool
- Bathing suits won't fade and will dry feeling soft instead of stiff and smelly
Questions and Answers:
How much salt do I add to the pool?
- Approximately 26 lbs for every 1,000 gallons of pool water or about 520 lbs in a 20,000 gallon pool. This equals about 1 level teaspoon of salt added to a gallon of water
Am I swimming in sea water?
- No, the world wide average of sea water is 36,000 parts per million. They typical system uses a saline content of 3200 parts per million, a tear drop has salinity of 7,000 parts per million
Do I still have a chlorine test kit?
- Yes, electrolytic chlorination produces free chlorine whenever the pump is running, a regular chlorine test kit is still used to measure the amount of chlorine in the pool water.
Do I still have to Shock/Super chlorinate the pool once a week with regular chlorine?
- No, most systems have a super chlorinate feature that can be activated if extra chlorine is needed.
What type of salt do I use?
Do not use the following types of salt-they may stain the pool
- Iodized salt or Rock Salt
- Salts with anti-caking agents (more than 1%)
- Yellow prussiate of soda
- Sodium ferrocyanide
- Hexameta phosphate
Do I still have to balance my pool water?
- Yes, all a system does is sanitize the water, all other pool parameters such as pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness have to be maintianed. These parameters are much eaiser to maintian with a system installed on your pool
Do I have to add salt everyday or every week?
- No, once the intial dose of salt is added salt only has to be checked once a month. Most systems have a built in salt display.
Is an electrolytic chlorination system compatible with my pool finish?
- The systems are compatible with all vinyl and concrete finishes.
Is an electrolytic chlorination compatible with my Pump, Filter and Heater?
- Yes, since the salinity in the water is still considered fresh water there are no compatiblity issues with most filtration and heater systems.
Who Do I call if I have a problem?
- The first point of contact would be the dealer from whom the system was purchased. Dealers, installers and consumers can always call the manufacurers technical support line.
Pool Equipment Compatibility
- Stainless steel pool filters- Not Recomended
- Copper Plumbing- Pool chemistry is critical
- Heaters- Older designs had some issues with dissimilar metals. Newer models no problems
- Anchors- Aluminum not recommended, Bronze or plastic are ok
- All Pool Finishes OK
- Automatic pool covers or winter covers- Periodically open cover to let gases out. Chlorine demand will go down
Cell Cleaning
Inspect cell for calcium build-up
- Non-reversing systems have to be checked weekly!
- Some systems-warning light comes on when cell is dirty
Low Calcium, "balanced" pool=less build up
Cleaning procedure
- Small amounts: use garden hose, wooden scraper
- Large amounts: use 2:1 water/muriatic acid solution
- always add acid to water
- wait for foaming actions to stop (5-10 minutes)
- rinse cell with hose
- dispose of acid properly
